Aprovia® Top Fungicide label expanded via Minor Use Program to help manage Alternaria blight on ginseng

By Josh Mosiondz, Minor Use Coordinator, OMAFRA

The Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) recently announced the approval of a minor use label expansion registration for APROVIA® TOP Fungicide for control of Alternaria blight (Alternaria panax) on ginseng in Canada. APROVIA® TOP Fungicide was already labeled for management of diseases on a wide range of crops in Canada.

This minor use proposal was submitted by Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada, Pest Management Centre (AAFC-PMC) as a joint project with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) IR-4 project as a result of minor use priorities established by growers and extension personnel.

The following is provided as an abbreviated, general outline only. Users should be making disease management decisions within a robust integrated disease management program and should consult the complete label before using APROVIA® TOP Fungicide.

Crop(s)TargetRate (mL product/ha)Application InformationPHI (days)
GinsengAlternaria blight (Alternaria panax)643 – 967Begin applications at emergence and re-apply on a 10-14-day interval when weather is favourable. A minimum spray volume of 200 L/ha is recommended. Increase water volumes as the canopy density increases. Do not apply more than 3.9 L/ha/season.14

APROVIA® TOP Fungicide contains a new active ingredient for ginseng in FRAC Group 7 – benzovindiflupyr (solatenol) and difenoconazole which is in FRAC Group 3. It is similar in its activity to Miravis Duo, which contains a different Group 7 (pydiflumetofen) and the same Group 3 (difenoconazole) fungicide. While both products should provide effective control, there is more data to show that APROVIA® TOP is effective on Alternaria specifically on ginseng.

APROVIA® TOP Fungicide is toxic to aquatic organisms, certain beneficial insects, and non-target terrestrial plants.  Benzovindiflupyr and Difenoconazole are persistent and may carryover. Do not apply this product or allow drift to other crops or non-target areas. Do not contaminate off-target areas or aquatic habitats when spraying or when cleaning and rinsing spray equipment or containers.

Follow all other precautions, restrictions and directions for use on the APROVIA® TOP Fungicide label carefully.
