For the second year in a row, the Hazelnut IPM Grower Training presentations are being presented virtually. Traditionally, these sessions have been held over an afternoon in May at the Simcoe Research Station, however due to current COVID-related restrictions they are once again being made available as a series of online YouTube presentations. Presentations for 2021 can be found below.
Part 1 – Intro to Hazelnut IPM: A general overview of IPM, how to scout an orchard, background information on hazelnuts needed for scouting and where to find additional resources (51 minutes).
Part 2 – Eastern Filbert Blight: A general overview of the biology, identification, monitoring and some general management practices for eastern filbert blight disease in Ontario hazelnuts. (24 minutes)
Part 3 – Bacterial Blight: A general overview of the biology, identification, monitoring and some general management practices for bacterial blight disease in Ontario hazelnuts. (19 minutes)
Part 4 – Other Hazelnut Diseases: Discusses less common or less serious diseases that occasionally affect hazelnuts, including powdery mildew, root rots/wet feet, lichens, mosses, decay fungi and canker diseases. (19 minutes)
Part 5: Early Spring Insect Pests: An overview of the biology, identification and general management of insect pests affecting Ontario hazelnuts early in the season, from budbreak through mid-June. Insects covered: bud mites, spring-feeding caterpillars, gypsy moth, aphids and scale. (38 minutes)
Part 6 – Late Season Insect Pests: An overview of the biology, identification and general management of insect pests affecting Ontario hazelnuts later in the season, from June through harvest. Insects covered: Japanese beetle, foliar mites, fall webworm and leafhoppers. There is also discussion of insects that are sometimes seen in hazelnut orchards but typically don’t have significant impacts on trees, including green weevil, blotch leafminer and birch sawfly (35 minutes)
Part 7 – Insect Pests to Watch Out for: An overview of three potential insect pests – filbertworm, hazelnut weevil and brown marmorated stink bug – that are not currently causing significant damage in Ontario hazelnut orchards, but are present and have been reported to be problematic in other hazelnut growing regions.
