Reminder: ON Hoppenings Lunch & Learn – Monday, May 17 – Irrigating Hops with guest Rebecca Shortt and General IPM Scouting with Dr. Melanie Filotas

Overview: Join OMAFRA specialists Evan Elford and Melanie Filotas for bi-monthly online Zoom discussions about Ontario hops. The noon-hour discussions with Evan, Melanie and guest speakers provide insight into seasonal and new/exciting areas of hop production, pest management and marketing. Bring your questions and discussion points.

All ON Hoppenings take place on Monday’s from 12-1pm unless otherwise stated. Attendance is free and open to anyone, however you must pre-register to receive the meeting log-in details. Anyone wishing to ask questions in advance can email Evan (evan.elford@ontario.ca) or Melanie (melanie.filotas@ontario.ca) by 8:30 am on the Friday before the scheduled webinar OR enter it in the question field when you register and we will do our best to have a thorough answer during the session. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

May 17th topics: Irrigating Hops with guest Rebecca Shortt and General IPM Scouting in the Hop Yard with Dr. Melanie Filotas.

This month our guest speaker is Rebecca Shortt, the Irrigation/Water Quantity Engineer with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.  Her role with the Ministry involves helping Ontario producers improve their production by providing irrigation and water management expertise to the province. Background: Rebecca is the co-author of many OMAFRA irrigation publications including the Irrigation Best Management Practices book. Most recently, Rebecca has developed demonstrations on water efficiency and soil moisture monitoring. Her specialty includes water permitting and drip irrigation. Rebecca holds a M.Sc. and B.Sc. from McGill University in Agricultural Engineering and has been active in water and irrigation associations across Canada and the U.S.

Rebecca will be discussing a brief introduction to:

  • How to develop your irrigation schedule (how long to run daily irrigation)
  • How to measure if the irrigation schedule is working (using soil moisture instruments)
  • How to measure if the irrigation system is operating effectively
