Topic: New hop cultivar development with Dr. Jason McCallum

This month we will be hosting Dr. Jason McCallum, Research Scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada at the Charlottetown Research and Development Centre. Dr. McCallum will be providing an overview of his work on new hop cultivar development including the establishment of and diversity in the collection, details on some important chemical traits, aromas/oils, and other cultivar characteristics.

Research in Detail: Dr. McCallum is an AAFC Research Scientist in the area of Phytochemistry, working out of the Charlottetown Research and Development Centre (CRDC) for the past 12 years.  Dr. McCallum’s research focuses on plant natural products chemistry, including the discovery of new phytochemicals and the characterization of their biological activities for improved human health and plant performance.  In 2015 he initiated a project focused on studying the chemical diversity of wild, native hops (Humulus lupulus ssp. lupuloides), and is currently developing named, wild-hop cultivars for commercial release.  His work on wild hops has been featured prominently in Maritimes and national news media.
