Health Canada is seeking feedback from the cannabis industry on a financial relief proposal.

The following information is from a communication I received from Health Canada that should be of interest to all Canadian licenced cannabis producers.

Health Canada recognizes that the COVID-19 pandemic has created exceptional challenges that are being felt across the cannabis industry and that these uncertain times have created new financial pressures for businesses.

To help minimize the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Health Canada is considering providing economic relief to the cannabis industry by proposing to defer payment of the 2020-2021 annual fee for cannabis licence holders in their first or subsequent fiscal year (i.e. those issued a licence prior to April 1, 2020).

A Notice of Intent to consult on the proposal will be published in the Canada Gazette, Part I on June 13, 2020. Health Canada is seeking feedback from the cannabis industry, interested stakeholders and the general public on the proposed deferral of the payment date through a 14-day public consultation period, closing on June 27, 2020.  Input can be provided via the Health Canada’s Consultation web page or directly to

Comments collected as part of this consultation will be used to inform the approach to provide the cannabis industry with financial relief amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
