Ontario hazelnut growers are invited to attend the following training workshops being offered by OMAFRA during the 2019 field season.
Hazelnut Integrated Pest Management Training
Date: Wednesday, May 8 2019, 1-4:30 pm
Location: Simcoe-OMAFRA Resource Centre Auditorium
Interested in learning more about hazelnut insect and disease pests? This 3.5 hour workshop will provide hazelnut growers, scouts and industry members with an overview of integrated pest management in hazelnuts. Topics covered include: establishing a healthy hazelnut orchard, hazelnut growth and development, diseases (eastern filbert blight, bacterial blight); insects (filbert bud mite, Japanese beetle, hazelnut aphid, foliar mites, hazelnut weevil, filbertworm, obliquebanded leafroller and early season caterpillar defoliators), and vertebrate pests. While much of the session will be indoors, there will be a trip to the Simcoe Research Station’s hazelnut orchard to learn how to scout a hazelnut orchard and look at pests currently present on trees. Although the main focus is identification, management will also be discussed. A minimum of 10 registrants is required to run this session. Deadline to register: Friday May 3, 2019. See registration details below.
Hazelnut Sprayer Optimization Workshop
Date: Tuesday May 28, 2019, 9:00 am-1 pm (Rain date May 29 9:00 am – 1 pm)
Location: Simcoe-OMAFRA Resource Centre (meet in Auditorium)
This indoor and in-field workshop is intended for sprayer operators or those planning on spraying hazelnuts. Join OMAFRA specialists to talk about the importance of proper spray coverage in hazelnuts and discuss what “good” spray coverage looks like. Learn how to calibrate your sprayer and adjust settings to match the height of the plants. This workshop will also discuss appropriate application methods for new and mature hazelnut trees. Lunch will be provided. Sponsored by FMC Canada and Ferrero Canada. This workshop has a minimum of 10 and maximum of 20 registrants. Deadline to register: Tuesday May 20.
To register for either of these sessions, contact the Agriculture Information Contact Centre at 1-877-424-1300. These sessions may be cancelled if the minimum registration numbers are not reached by the deadline.
Hi folks. Is there a cost to these workshops? Are any new varieties of hazelnut completely resistant or immune to EFB? Thanks
There is no cost to attend the OMAFRA hazelnut workshops. University of Guelph research trials have identified some hazelnut cultivars that appear to be more tolerant to Ontario strains of EFB, however at present nut characteristics of these cultivars may not be acceptable to all major hazelnut processors. Stay tuned to this blog for future updates on hazelnut cultivars.
